Sanitation

The Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department has 5 employees and is responsible for the collection and disposal of garbage, recycling, yard waste, brush and leaves.

The Sanitation Division has a once a week garbage pick up for single and duplex family dwellings.

Garbage is to be set at the street curbside after 5 p.m. the day before collection or before 6 a.m. the day of collection.  Residences must use the container provided by the City of Fort Dodge for the basic fee. If an additional garbage container is required, residents can purchase a second container at a cost of $67.50 and increase the monthly cost of garbage collection from $14.50 to $29.00 per month.  This can be done at the Water Department,
located on the first floor of the Municipal Building, 819 1st Avenue South, Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Recyclables are picked up curbside every other Wednesday, alternating by east or west of 15th Street. See the garbage and recycling calendar for specific dates.
The items eligible for recycling are listed below.

Paper Products: Newsprint, magazines, junk mail, cereal boxes, shiny inserts, paper egg cartons, twelve pack cartons, and paperback books.  No waxy cardboard such as milk cartons.

Glass: Clear containers only.  Rinse out and remove lids; labels do not need to be removed.  No window glass or light bulbs.

Plastic: Rinse out and remove labels.  Cans do not need to be flattened.  Painted labels are acceptable. Plastic grocery bags are accepted but do not use them to bag up other recycled items.

Metal Cans: Rinse out and remove labels.  Cans do not need to be flattened.  Painted labels are acceptable.

Aluminum: Foil, pie plates, etc. Need to be clean and placed with metal cans.

Recyclables should be co-mingled into your roll out cart that has the blue lid.

Yard waste is picked up on Fridays for the entire city. Residents must schedule their address for yard waste pickup by noon on Thursday each week they have bags.  This can be done via the city website under the "Report a Concern" icon located on the home page, or by calling the Public Works department at 515-955-6139.  There will be no yard waste pickup during a holiday week.

Yard waste bags and stickers may be purchased at any grocery or discount store. Stickers may also be purchased at the Water Billing Office, located on the first floor of the Municipal Building, 819 1st Avenue South, Fort Dodge, Iowa.

The yard waste site will be open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 8a-12p and Saturday from 8a-4p. The site will be closed Wednesdays and observed holidays.
