An exhibit of twenty-eight permanent collection etchings, lithographs
and aquatints created by American and European artists. Often these are
scenes sketched when the artists were far from home and later etched and
printed. Sometimes the scenes are of familiar territories near their
homes.
In 1820, one hundred and ninety-two years ago, overseas
travel was not easy. Transportation on tall-masted, sailing ships and
stage coach took weeks and often, depending on the distance, months.
Health, safety and political issues were numerous. Even in 1930, only
eighty-two years ago, in the period between World War I and World War
II, at the start of the worldwide economic depression, when commercial
flying was risky and railroads still in disarray from war bombings,
revolutions, and general sabotage.
