On July 7th, 1948 Edna Griffin went to Katz Drug Store in Des Moines, IA to enjoy some ice cream with her young daughter, Phyllis, Leonard Hudson, and John Bibbs. The manager, Maurice Katz, denied them service, stating, "It is the policy of our store that we don't serve coloreds." Enraged, all three adults filed criminal charges and an additional civil suit against the store and its manager for racial discrimination. Edna also organized sit-ins and picketing at the store. Thanks to her courageous acts, Mr. Katz (after escaping three previous charges) was found guilty of violating Iowa Civil Rights Law and fined $50.
