Fort Dodge    The Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB) maintains an ongoing effort to reach out and offer services to Iowans who are experiencing blindness or vision loss. Liz Soenen, a Rehabilitation Teacher with the department, will present information about help for area residents available through IDB at a public meeting on May 8 from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in Building 1at the Northridge Apartments, 2805 6th Ave N,

Fort Dodge. Learn ways to perform tasks you may now find frustrating or challenging because of vision loss.

The meeting will also be an opportunity to meet others in the areas that are experiencing vision problems. Several area residents have expressed the desire to begin meeting and form a local mutual support group. The meeting is free and open to the public including those experiencing vision loss, friends, family members, and service providers.

Fort Dodge resident Bonnie Kennedy, a recent graduate from the Adult Orientation Center at the Iowa Department for the Blind, will facilitate the meeting with Liz and share her personal perspective on IDB services.

Becky Criswell, supervisor of the Independent Living Program at the Iowa Department for the Blind, is enthusiastic about these local events. "People often fear that a loss of vision means a loss of independence and a loss of meaningful activities," said Criswell. "These opportunities to meet with Iowans in their communities help people discover ways to maintain their independence and to continue activities they enjoy."
