Hiring Information:

The Fire Department requires applicants wanting to become a firefighter to have taken a written general knowledge test and a physical agility test. The recruiting process follows the State of Iowa, Civil Service guidelines. Our EMS staff follow similar procedures. We are a member of the Central Iowa Fire & EMS Testing Consortium (CIFEMSC) and accept the computer-based IO Solutions written test and CIFEMSC physical agility or CPAT or FDFD's local physical agility.

Fort Dodge Fire Department requires it's firefighters to live within 15 miles of the city limits within one year of hire.

Application Guideline:

  1. Job Announcement Made
  2. Applicant Applies on City of Fort Dodge website
  3. Written Testing will be scheduled at the discretion of the candidate through ICCC or the Central Iowa Testing Consortium at DMACC. To be eligible to move forward, the candidate must have a certificate of a passing score within one year of the job announcement close. The test will be IO Solutions NFSI test.
  4. Physical Ability Testing will be held spring, and fall, as well as with each job announcement at FDFD. We will also accept the Central Iowa Testing Consortium PAT and the CPAT. To receive an interview, candidates must have a certificate of successful completion within one year of the job announcement closing.
  5. Panel interviews will be held at FDFD.
    1. Follow up interview with the Chief may be requested as needed
  1. Candidates that successfully pass the interview process will be placed on the civil service eligibility list and hired as needed.

Welcome to Fort Dodge Fire Department’s recruitment page. FDFD has been protecting the citizens of Fort Dodge since 1854. We provide fire, EMS, HazMat, and technical rescue services out of one central station. Our Fire Division staff work the California Swing on 24-hour shifts and our EMS Division staff rotating 12-hour shifts.

  • Starting wage for firefighter is $52,590.72 per year
  • Starting wage for paramedic is $44,640.96 per year> Up to $49,038.08 with Lateral Entry
  • Starting wage for EMT is $34,885.76 per year> Up to $38,642.24 with Lateral Entry
  • We offer a $5000 sign on bonus for Paramedic certification
  • We offer lateral entry for EMS division staff
  • Fire Division staff are under the MFPRSI Pension System
  • EMS Division staff are under the IPERS Protected Class Pension System

FDFD responds to about 6000 calls for service a year. These calls breakdown to 85% EMS and 15% Fire. Of these calls, 50 are structure fires and many more are acute EMS incidents. Our EMS division works closely with Life Flight and Trinity Regional Medical Center. We also provide ALS services throughout Webster County.

Our daily staffing includes:

  • Engine 1
  • Engine 5
  • Medic 1 (7am-7pm)
  • Medic 2 (11am-11pm)
  • Medic 3
  • Car 2

We also have an administrative staff of the Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, EMS Supervisor and Business Operations Specialist.
